Beech

Welcome to Beech Class

Learning in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 is supported by continuous provision underpinned by the National Curriculum as well as our own curriculum.  We believe that our children learn best through play, when inspired and motivated by their own interests.

Skilful adults enable this to happen through a well-planned, captivating environment that is carefully mapped across all areas of our EYFS and Key Stage 1 curriculum.

The children benefit from whole-class teaching, adult-directed and self-initiated learning within our stimulating learning environments.  This allows for meaningful scaffolds and appropriate challenges that suit each individual learner.

Class Teachers:

  • Miss Bicker (Lead teacher) - Wed, Thurs, Fri
  • Miss Lyons - Mon, Tues

Class TAs:

  • Miss Barrett
  • Mrs Holden

At St Edmund's Catholic Primary School we use Little Wandle Revised Letters and Sounds to teach phonics, reading and spelling. Each day, children have directed phonics and spelling sessions. They are taught in their year groups and all our staff are fully trained to run the programme.

Children are given books that are decodable and matched to their specific phonics knowledge, ensuring they can read the text independently and reinforce learned phonics skills.

Once they have completed Phase 5 phonics, they move on to wonderful chapter books that continue to develop fluency and comprehension as well as foster a love of reading!

Cards to support phonics at home can be ordered from the Collins website:

Autumn Term

This term we will be learning through lots of texts.  Here are some of the books we will be looking at as we explore lots of subjects.

Important Information

If you are able to, please send in a spare T-shirt/socks/trousers for your child in case they get wet or muddy in the water tray or mud kitchen.

Please send in children with water in their bottles, not squash.

PE is on Wednesday and Friday.

Reading books will be changed each week. Please record any comments about your child's reading in the Reading Log.

Forest School Dates:

  • Year 1&2 - 4th December
  • Year R – 11th December
  • Year R – 18th December

All dates will be morning sessions.  The children will leave shortly after the morning register and return to school in time for lunch.  They can take their water bottles and snacks with them.

Please ensure they are dressed in warm layers and wear waterproof footwear.  They might get wet, muddy and smoky (from the camp fire).  So they can change in to clean, dry clothes when they return, please send school uniforms* (including shoes) in a separate bag.

*Their winter PE kit is good to send in on Forest School days as it is quick and easy for the children to change into.

PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE TO SPEAK TO US IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, UPDATES OR CONCERNS.
